Lopud Island Holiday
After Lopud's 15th-century Franciscan monastery became the seat for the Governor of the Republic of Dubrovnik in 1459, many nobles, merchants and sea captains chose this charming island as the location for their summer villas, setting in motion a vogue for relaxation in this peaceful retreat. Today, this tranquillity is maintained by the complete lack of cars on the island - hand-pulled wooden cart is the favoured method of transportation these days. The village of Lopud's beautiful stone architecture is arranged around a wide crescent with stunning views across azure waters towards the rolling hills of the mainland.
Beaches
A narrow strip of golden beach reclines between the beachfront and the warm waters, offering safe swimming and comfortable sunbathing for those who visit.
Shopping
There are some shops situated around the harbour, selling essentials and tasteful souvenirs. For a more rounded shopping experience, Dubrovnik isn't far away and offers boutiques, stalls and markets.
Nightlife
Perhaps the best time to appreciate Lopud Island's laid-back charm is in the evening, when day visitors have returned home and the peace is tangible. Take a stroll along the delightful shoreline, enjoy an al fresco drink on a quayside terrace or frequent one of Lopud's intimate bars.
Local Specialities
The meals in Lopud's few restaurants are typically served with the sound of waves lapping against the shore, sea breeze caressing your cheeks and a friendly smile. The menus tend to feature traditional Croatian cuisine with lots of freshly-caught fish dishes listed on the specials board.
