Greece Holiday - Beaches and Sightseeing
Almost every beach has a seafront taverna, or you can spend leisurely evenings at a harbor-side restaurant watching the sun set and people taking evening strolls. If you want more lively nightlife, most larger resorts have something to offer. The numerous fine beaches of Greece attract sun-worshippers from all over Europe. Active types will find that in most of the larger resorts, and some others, water sports are available, especially during the high season. Greece has an enormous wealth of history and many of the islands have areas of interest that reflect this, such as the ancient Minoan ruins to be found on Crete and the fascinating sights and sounds of historic Rhodes Town, with its labyrinth of cobbled streets and courtyards. Likewise there are areas of stunning natural beauty to be enjoyed, and inland is often surprisingly lush and green. This makes many of the resorts good destinations for walkers.
Shopping and Markets
Almost every major town or village has a lively and colorful market where you can soak up the atmosphere and buy the regional specialties on offer. Many of the larger resorts also have some interesting shops to browse around. The euro replaced the drachma on 1st January 2002. There are 1.39 euros to the £1.00 as at 4th October 2004. All resorts have exchange facilities in banks (08.00 - 14.00 Mon - Fri). Traveler's cheques are widely accepted. More details are available from the Greek Tourist Board on 020 7734 5997.
Walking
On Thassos and Kefalonia guided walking excursions are available.
Wine Tasting
In Kefalonia on August 16th the Robola Wine Festival has free wine, music and dancing. There are two excursions where you can enjoy wine tasting: Southern Explorer and Southern Comfort. In Zakynthos we offer a half-day wine and shopping excursion including a trip to Kallinikos vineyard.
Festivals
Experiencing a local festival of Greece is a great way to absorb local culture. On August 11th in Corfu, see the procession of Saint Spiridon through Corfu Town. October 20th in Kefalonia sees the festival of Saint Gerasimos when the body of the saint is paraded through the streets and the sick lay down to be healed.
