Kefalonia Holiday

Kefalonia is a Greek island with a difference. There is an understated atmosphere that brings many people here in search of a Greece untainted by mass tourism. The natural beauty of Kefalonia, however, is anything but understated with rugged mountains and olive groves combining to create some spectacular scenery.

"Castaway Kefalonia - the island of Captain Corelli fame - is the unexplored giant of the Ionian Sea. Rarely crowded and rich in natural beauty, it begs to be discovered."

Kefalonia Holiday - Beaches

The island is fringed with beaches that range from the long sandy stretches of the south, to the more dramatic coastline of the north where steep cliffs enclose pebbly coves. Lapped by startlingly blue waters, the snow white sweep of Myrtos Bay lies before a breathtaking backdrop of cliffs, making this one of the most beautiful beaches on the island. Some of the beaches on Kefalonia are protected to ensure that rare Loggerhead turtles can lay their eggs undisturbed. Water sports are available during high season on the main beaches in Lassi.

Shopping

The best things to buy here are locally produced cheeses, wines, olive oils and crafts, chic boutiques are certainly not on the agenda. The best place to do this is at Argostoli's harbour-front market which has plenty to offer the intrepid shopper.

Nightlife

A great Greek tradition is the evening stroll or 'volta' and the nightlife here definitely goes at walking pace. Normally revolving around food, drink and a good view the evenings here are slow and long. If you really want more boisterous action you can find bars and disco in the larger resorts.

Much of Kefalonia was devastated in 1953 by a huge earthquake. However in the rebuilding it has managed to retain a true sense of Greek life that has been lost on many other islands. It is also one of the sunniest Greek islands making the coast and its plethora of tiny fishing villages particularly enjoyable. Here you can witness the day-to-day activities of authentic Greece. As you head inland Kefalonia sweeps up into the dramatic mountain scenery that draws so many people here. Monasteries dot the pine-clad, craggy hills that lead to the impressive Mount Aenos which dominates the south of the island. In the north spectacular cliffs are the defining characteristic of a stunning coastline.

Local Specialities

Food is typically Greek and most local tavernas serve up some fine examples of its best dishes. Seafood, fresh vegetables and fruit play a huge part in most meals. One tasty way to start your meal is with aubergines and courgettes, deep-fried in batter and served with lemon juice. Another Kefalonian specialty is a meat, rice and tomato pie all generously flavored with fresh herbs and spices. The local white wine, Robola, is reputed to be one of the best in Greece and is a wonderful accompaniment to most dishes.
