Funchal Holiday

Funchal, capital of Madeira about 25km from the airport, takes its name from the wild fennel found by the first settlers in 1419. Home to about a third of Madeira's population, it sits in a sheltered, south-facing valley, with an impressive backdrop of volcanic mountains. From Funchal steep, cobbled streets wind up into the hills along which you'll find art galleries, antique shops, botanical gardens and wine shops where you can sample Madeiran wine. Mainly suitable for couples or families with older children.

Beaches

The coastline is rocky and Funchal compensates for its lack of beaches with a seafront lido. Alternatively take a day trip out to the tiny island of Porto Santo, 3 hours by ferry from Funchal or a 15 minute flight from the airport. This more barren island has fine, sandy beaches.

Shopping

With many shopping opportunities in Funchal, from the market, to the commercial centre and various shops lining the streets, Funchal town has it all. Most popular amongst tourists, aside from the Madeiran wine, are the locally produces embroideries, leather shoes and tapestries.

Nightlife

Many of the hotels arrange folk dancing shows, and there are regular floor and cabaret show in the Casino Park Complex. At night, Funchal offers numerous bars, some discos, many excellent restaurants and a casino. Go to the bars in the old town to sample a taste of local life.

Local Specialities

Funchal has a rich scattering of excellent restaurants serving both international and local fare. Reflecting its more upmarket appeal, there are consequently very few fast food outlets.
