International Travel Checklist: 5 Things To Always Bring

Trekking across the globe should be a memorable experience that you want to do again and again the more you do it. Packing is always a chore no matter the length you travel and with airline baggage restrictions being what they are, figuring out what to pack can require some major decisions. However, planning and spontaneity will be in perfect balance so long as you remember to bring the following five things:

  1. Unlocked cell phone

International call rates for the carrier you use at home can be astronomical when you use your cell phone abroad. It’s much easier to either carry an unlocked cell phone or buy one when you land, put in a local pay as you go phone carrier with loaded credit and make any calls. A lot of the pay as you go plans will also give you data credit as well as cheap international call rates for when you just have to call home.

  1. Money/Currency

Having a little cash on hand in the local currency before you even land is important because of debit card and credit card differences throughout the world. In Europe, the chip and pin system is used in all their cards and some places won’t accept swipe cards. Those that do accept swipe cards might have restrictions as to how much can be paid for using them. For that reason, cash is the only sure way to be sure you can pay people.

  1. Map

Google maps on your phone is great but there are times when you don’t have any data to use on getting step by step directions, don’t have a signal, or get you lost. That’s not to say that the map has to be paper based! A lot of street maps (like London A to Z) provide digital additions that don’t require a data or internet connection to access. It’s always good to have a back up when you’re losing yourself in a new place so that you’re not really ever lost! You can also use GPS devices from backcountry.com, their products are bit pricey but you can use backcountry coupon to save money.

  1. Plug Adapter

Inevitably something you’ve brought from home needs charging but the voltage can change from country to country. Getting an all in one plug adapter means that pieces aren’t lost when they aren’t being used in one country because there’s only one piece to remember. No need to fry your electronics when all they need is a good charge.

  1. First Aid Kit

Create a small and light kit to keep with you when you travel anywhere. A few pain pills, some antacids, some Band-Aids, and pain patches (like Salonpas) should do the trick. It’ll save some time and money navigating foreign chemists.

Congrats on your upcoming trip outside of the country! Be safe but be sure to have as much fun as possible as you navigate the world. With the items on this list, you’re sure to have a much easier time and can rest easy as you experience another culture and country. International travel can be eye opening…so long as you’re prepared. Have fun!
