The climate in Shanghai can be classified as sub-tropical monsoon climate and one will experience four distinctive seasons in one year. Generally speaking, it is warm in spring, hot in summer, cool in autumn and moist and cold in winter. The annual precipitation is moderate and evenly spread all year round.

The hottest time in Shanghai lasts from July to August. And in the last few years, Shanghai becomes increasingly hot in summer. The calculated days of over 35 degree centigrade could surplus 10 days. The coldest time falls in Shanghai in late January or early February, usually during the China Spring Festival. Although the coldest days are not as many as the hottest days, they last no more than one week, the heavy moist and cold air are even unbearable to people from north part of China. The bitter north wind blows now and then. So as long as people undertake outdoor activities, thick clothes, gloves, and hats can never be forgot. Snowing days does not normally happen to Shanghai; sometimes it doesn’t snow in the whole winter. March to May is the time for nice sunshine and pleasant blossom, which proves to be the high season for Shanghai day tours. The following time, from mid June to first ten days of July, is pretty rich in rains. It is often sunny now but in several minutes rains may comes. According to the statistical data, the amount of rains in these 20-30 days amounts one quarter of the yearly precipitation in Shanghai. So travels to Shanghai in this period are not highly recommended because the weather may keep people in doors at any time. Typhoons alone the coastline near Shanghai usually arise in the end of August to early or mid September, in which time the heavy rain may pour down at any time. If one plan a trip to Shanghai in this time, a sun-shadow or and an umbrella will be both necessary for tourists who are afraid of both strong sunlight and rains.
